A project titled “Development of Mathematics Proficiency in North–East India”
A project titled “Development of Mathematics Proficiency in North–East India”, under the Scheme Synergistic Training program Utilizing the Scientific and Technological Infrastructure” (STUTI) Programof the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of Indiahas been sanctioned for Department of Mathematics, National Institute of Technology Agartala which cost Rs. 2,24,47,000/- (Rupees two crore twenty-four lakh and forty-seven thousand only)per annum for three years. Initially, the project is sanctioned for the one year. The project can be extended for two more years after the successful completion of the 1st year. There are 13 Institutes selected for the STUTI project from all over India. From North East part of India, our Institute is the only recipient of this project. In this project, our Institute shall function as a Project Management Unit (PMU). According to the STUTI Program guideline, there are two major components that will be conduct by the PMU. 1. Twenty two training programs (7 days long) on DST-supported Research &Development (R&D) equipment targeting Scientists/Professors/PhDs and PDFs actively involved in research across various institutions of North-East India. 2. Twelve awareness program (1-day duration) on R&D equipment/facility for School students (Science stream class 11 and 12) in catchment areas by means of popular science events.
This project will improve students’ conceptual understanding, strategic competence, procedural knowledge, and problem-solving techniques of Mathematical theories and applications. Especially, students from the north-eastern part of our country will be benefitted. The awareness program will help school students to know about higher education prospects and applications in the field of Mathematics via tanning on sophisticated equipment. It will enhance their mathematical skill performance, cognitive development, and also quick response preparation. Hands-on session on different mathematical computer applications and software will boost their skills and new ideas. This project will make them feel mathematics as sensible, useful, and worthwhile. The training programs will lead to help the researchers to know about many optimization techniques, mathematical modelling, and industrial prospects. Training on engineering mathematics in a comprehensive manner will create a strong mathematical community with different disciplines of science and engineering.
National Institute of Technology Agartala, erstwhile Tripura Engineering College (established in 1965), the 20th member of the NIT fraternity, was established in 2006 to impart quality technical education into various level of higher learning. It is a centrally funded technical institution with Deemed to be University status and is a National Centre of Excellence. At present the institute has 13 departments covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines offering B. Tech, BS-MS, BT-MT, M-Tech, MCA, M. Sc, MBA and PhD programs in various fields of specialization. The mission of the Institute is “To help to improve the economic development of the country particularly the North-East states and also the public systems, through pursuit of excellence in technical education, research, consultancy and training”.
The Mathematics Department was started alongwith NIT Agartala in 2006, formerly Tripura Engineering College, and a revered Institute since inception and completed its glorious fifty years, established in 1965. Mathematics Department is continuously motivated towards excellence in research and teaching and has accomplished in this venture to a large extent. Budding progressively, at the moment the Department teaches Mathematics to under graduate and post graduate students. From the academic year 2019-20, the Department offers BS-MS (Mathematics and Computing) and M.Sc. (Mathematics and Computing) courses togather with Ph.D program. From 2021-22 the department is starting a new course BTMT in Computational Mathematics. The Department has highly qualified faculty members consisting of one Professor, four Associate Professors, nine Assistant Professors, one Teaching Assistant and one Lab Assistant. In their pursuit of research the faculty members are doing an extensive study in vast and diverse fields. The Departemnt has recieved DST FIST grant of amount Rs. 49 lakhs. The Department recieved various projects from different funding agencies like SERB, BRNS, UGC, CSIR, MNRE etc.
